Pump stations play a critical role in keeping communities safe from flooding during storms. This is particularly true of those situated near coasts, rivers, and lakes. Bar screens and trashrakes are commonly employed to protect these pumps, but not just any screen will work in these scenarios. With this in mind, Duperon has developed its stormwater line of products. The FlexRake® HD, Harvest Rake, and Self-Cleaning Trashrack (SCT) were each developed with unique needs of stormwater applications in mind.

In wastewater operations, washer compactors perform a deceptively simple function: reducing debris volume for handling and disposal. But a lot of factors can complicate this process, including atypical wastewater debris, inconsistent debris volumes, and solids that cling to and/or jam the auger.

The adage about the three most important factors in real estate value — location, location, location — carries a certain degree of truth for wastewater collection systems as well. How close to the source of problematic clogging materials a debris handling solution is installed can be just as important as how efficiently that solution neutralizes them — an especially critical response to increased ‘flushable wipes’ use resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are several ways to evaluate each of those variables and choose the best option.

Most bar screen and raking systems are expected to last 10 to 25 years before needing replacement. As components wear, and steel corrodes, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have to choose between replacing parts and specifying a new system. Both situations can present a serious challenge. For example, replacing parts may seem more cost-effective in the short run; however, over time more and more components will inevitably fail or underperform, and the cost of parts, labor, and downtime will mount.

Effective wastewater screening during normal flow looks very different from screening during peak flow events. Under most circumstances, however, it isn’t possible to address both effectively. As such, engineers and municipalities design their screening with peak flow in mind. This means debris bypass or larger screen opening sizes and slower scraper speeds, a compromise that results in suboptimal screening during normal flows. Unfortunately, letting more debris through the screen during normal flow can lead to costly problems, such as pump clogs and more frequent cleanouts of the clarifier and digester.

Featured – WaterOnline.com – New Bar Screen Design Targets Heavy Vegetation In Waterways https://www.duperon.com/news/featured-wateronline-com-new-bar-screen-design-targets-heavy-vegetation-in-waterways/ Thu, 08 Sep 2022 13:00:32 +0000 https://www.duperon.com/?p=2909 Continue reading ]]>

Keeping loose vegetation out of a waterway is a common purpose for nearly every trashrack. As vegetation accumulates on a screen, it can cause blinding and lead to head loss. In applications with heavy vegetation, large floating mats can be particularly problematic. There are a lot of trashrack designs that have capabilities to address vegetation, but until recently there has never been a solution designed exclusively for such challenges.

Duperon developed the Harvest FlexRake specifically for applications where a constant flow of large vegetation presents a problem. Its unique design allows the scrapers to easily grip all manner of plant life while providing fine levels of screening with minimal blinding and head loss.

Trashracks serve the simple but critical purpose of keeping large debris out of a water system. They are often placed in high-volume channels, drainage canals, pump stations, or flood control systems. Whether the goal is to pull water out of a residential area or supply water to a hydroelectric plant or a nuclear facility, it is critical to ensure that the water doesn’t carry potentially damaging debris into the system beyond the screen.

In areas with harsh environments, such as those prone to heavy rainfalls or hurricanes, or even just those with a lot of vegetation, a trashrack can become clogged, causing potential flooding or preventing flow when it is needed. There are a variety of ways to handle this — trashracks can be cleaned manually or with third-party machinery. For many applications, a self-cleaning trashrack (SCT) can be an ideal solution. SCT systems offer key benefits that can save money while ensuring a continuous flow of water with minimal debris, protecting downstream equipment.

Many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) design their screening with peak flow in mind. Unfortunately, letting more debris through the screen during normal flow can lead to costly problems, such as pump clogs and more frequent cleanouts of the clarifier and digester.

Going the reverse direction and using too fine of a screen size can result in a whole new set of challenges. Excessive head loss can cause backups in the collection system during peak events leading to upstream issues or unintended bypass. In addition, running the scrapers at too high of a speed for too long can result in premature wear.

Next-gen Bar Screening System Maximizes Treatment Plant Resilience by Adapting to Changing Wastewater Conditions https://www.duperon.com/news/next-gen-bar-screening-system-maximizes-treatment-plant-resilience-by-adapting-to-changing-wastewater-conditions/ Thu, 21 Jan 2021 02:07:00 +0000 https://www.duperon.com/news/next-gen-bar-screening-system-maximizes-treatment-plant-resilience-by-adapting-to-changing-wastewater-conditions/ Continue reading ]]> The Duperon® FlexRake® IQ™ and FlexRake IQ2™ retain simplicity and reliability of the original, with new design for today’s challenging plant conditions.

Saginaw, MI, USA – January 21, 2021 – Duperon® today announces the FlexRake® IQ™ Series, an evolution of their original 1990s FlexRake bar screening line. An essential step in preliminary water and wastewater treatment, screening is the process of separating solids and other debris from liquids before treatment for reuse or discharge to local waterways. The new design of the FlexRake IQ increases debris removal, automatically increasing capacity and speed to accommodate changing conditions. During peak flow conditions, the optional FlexRake IQ2 adjusts the screen itself to provide maximum flexibility.

Today’s extreme weather conditions, changing populations, aging infrastructure, and new solids like “flushable wipes” have challenged civil engineers when sizing the screen for a community’s everyday conditions without causing backups during peak events. The revolutionary design of the FlexRake IQ and IQ2 solves this problem.

“We understood that treatment plant operators require real-time responsiveness to deal with changing conditions in the channel,” commented Bryce Funchion, mechanical engineer at Duperon Corporation. “We looked at the problem and wondered ‘what if the engineer didn’t have to modify their design to accommodate changing conditions? What if the screen itself adapted to them?’ We created the new design to provide an increased safety factor which assures system reliability during both normal flows and worst-case scenario events.”

The original FlexRake® is a robust, simple solution with a low cost of ownership. By re-imagining the components, the sequence of operation, and the possibility to automatically transform the screen field, the new FlexRake IQ and FlexRake IQ2 improve screening during normal flow while adding responsive features to navigate peak flow conditions without sacrificing the simplicity, ease of operation, and low cost of ownership for which Duperon is known.

Mark Turpin, Duperon Corporation president, believes the FlexRake IQ and FlexRake IQ2 offer real-world solutions for today’s stressed water treatment systems. “We have optimized resiliency by creating more responsiveness in dry and wet weather, maximizing solids removal throughout flow conditions, and taking on the heaviest solids loading events. The FlexRake IQ series is designed to provide the greatest range of flexibility over the broadest range of conditions.”

Designed for everyday conditions yet equipped for the unexpected, the new FlexRake IQ and FlexRake IQ2 provide a new level of adaptability for water treatment.
